EV charger installation
Cwmbran, Newport and South Wales
A home charger is safer and faster than a three-pin plug, and it lets you charge on a cheaper overnight tariff. We install home and workplace EV chargers across South Wales, check your supply can take it, and handle the paperwork.

What the installation involves
Before anything is fitted we look at your main fuse, your consumer unit and how much power the house already uses, so the charger will not overload the supply. We also check the earthing arrangement, which matters more for an outdoor charger than for most circuits.
The charger gets its own dedicated circuit from the consumer unit, with the right protection, and the cable is run to where you park. Once it is tested and working you get an Electrical Installation Certificate.
- Supply, load and earthing checks
- A dedicated circuit and protection
- Charger mounted where you park
- Notification to the local network operator
- Building control notification for the new circuit
- Testing, set-up and certificate
Smart chargers
Since 2022, home and workplace chargers sold in Great Britain have had to be smart chargers under the Electric Vehicles (Smart Charge Points) Regulations 2021. They can be scheduled to charge when electricity is cheapest, and the default settings avoid charging at peak times.
Notifying the network operator
New chargers have to be notified to the local distribution network operator, which in South Wales is National Grid Electricity Distribution. We do that for you. Occasionally the operator needs to upgrade the supply to the property first, and we will tell you early if that looks likely.
Workplace and commercial chargers
For businesses we install chargers for staff, visitors and fleet vehicles, including three phase supplies and load management so several cars can charge without overloading the building.
Questions
01Do I need off-street parking?
Usually, yes. Charging cables should not be trailed across a public pavement, so a home charger normally needs a driveway, garage or other private parking space.
02Will my electricity supply cope with a charger?
Most homes can take a standard 7kW charger. We check your main fuse and existing load first. If the supply is too small, the network operator can usually upgrade it, and we explain what that involves.
03Tethered or untethered?
A tethered charger has the cable attached, so you just plug in. An untethered one has a socket, which looks tidier and works with any cable. Both are fine. It mostly comes down to convenience.
